Introduction

We chose to do the Making a Difference Project on Wangari Maathai because we believe that she is an inspirational woman. Not only was she the first African woman to earn a doctorate degree, she was also the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize. We believe that Wangari Maathai’s character is exceptionally significant due to the rfact that she fought for important causes in her country. Most importantly she is an ideal role model for girls and young women world wide. She presents an image the people can look up to because she has accomplished a great deal and drastically changed lives for the better while struggling with the oppression from men. As we read about her, we thought her accomplishments were astonishing especially considering how she was continuously degraded. We believe because women are still treated unequally by men especially, Maathai’s character is one we can all look up to.
